Permabond 737 – Black Magic Is Still Magical!

Today we’re focusing on a Permabond classic, and one of our most popular products for years – Permabond 737. This toughened cyanoacrylate, also known as ‘Black Magic’ due to its colour and fantastic adhesion abilities, has been used far and wide and continues to be sought out as a reliable bonding solution in many industries.

Permabond 737 is fairly unique amongst cyanoacrylates due to its toughening, colour and flexibility. Compared to typical cyanoacrylates, this adhesive offers a much higher temperature resistance (up to 120°C), peel strength and impact resistance. Cyanoacrylates are normally brittle adhesives, but with a peel strength of 40-60 N/25mm and impact strength of 5-10 kJ/m², 737 is far from brittle.

In addition, due to 737’s toughening and greater flexibility, this adhesive is ideal for bonding dissimilar surfaces. It is much less likely to be affected by thermal shock or differences in substrate expansion and contraction coefficients. It’s also good on zinc surfaces – where conventional cyanoacrylates tend to snap straight off of these, 737’s flexibility allows it to better adhere to this often-tricky substrate.

Key features of Permabond 737 ‘Black Magic’ include:

  • Good gap filling abilities (up to 0.5mm)
  • Cures in seconds
  • Toughened, high impact resistance
  • Great flexibility and peel strength
  • Good temperature resistance
  • Jet black – great on dark substrates
  • No mixing required
  • Easy to dispense both by hand and through automated equipment

737 adheres well to a wide variety of substrates. Its rubber toughening makes it particularly suitable for bonding rubber. As well as this, it has good adhesion on many metals and plastics. In combination with Permabond POP Primer, it bonds very well to PTFE, PP, PE and even silicone.

Permabond 737 ‘Black Magic’ Applications:

There have been many industry applications for Permabond 737 – it would be an exhaustive list to write them all here, but some examples include:

  • Rubber anti-fatigue mats (such as those used by cashiers in shops)
  • Vehicle boarding steps (in buses, military vehicles)
  • Antenna cables
  • Automotive applications such as steering wheels and pedals
  • Firework sealing
  • Agricultural applications
  • Hunting guns
  • Mining Equipment
  • Magnet bonding

…and many more!
