Anaerobic sealants will not cure without the presence of metal and lack of oxygen. As it turns out, that is exactly what happens when an anaerobic sealant (adhesive) is sealed between a nut and a bolt on a threaded metal assembly or between two closely fitted metal cylindrical parts. With active metal ions and no oxygen, anaerobic adhesives and sealants rapidly cure to form a tough cross-linked plastic that will bond quite well to many metals.
There are 4 basic types of anaerobic sealant adhesives, namely:
- Retaining compound – these bond and seal cylindrical joints
- Threadlocker, – which bonds and seals threaded metal fasteners
- Thread sealant – which bonds and seals threaded pipes and fittings
- FIP Form in place gasket – FIPs create a gasket directly on a part
Within each type of application products vary by strength, temperature resistance, set speed, viscosity, and gap fill.
Permabond has designed and formulated adhesives and sealants to replace or augment mechanical joining methods of cylindrical metal joints such as keyways, interference fits, or shrink fits.
Permabond’s anaerobic retaining compounds fill voids – providing 100% surface-to-surface contact while mechanical joining techniques provide only 20% of surface-to-surface contact. The increased surface area directly relates to greater load-carrying capacity providing more than 5 times that of mechanical joining techniques. The increase in strength allows engineers to relax machine tolerances, eliminate the need for heated joining processes and provides them a method that increases the life of the components.
Permabond’s threadlockers prevent loosening due to vibration or thermal expansion on all metal threaded fasteners and provide corrosion-resistant seals. Threadlockers are more cost-effective and outperform alternative locking means such as lock washers, locking threads, and studs.
Permabond’s had a full line of anaerobic adhesive threadlockers. A very large range of viscosity spans from very low wicking grades for post-assembly sealing and weld porosity sealing to high viscosity for large nuts and bolts. Permabond threadlockers are available in permanent and removable grades as well as high temperature-resistant grades. Threadlockers are used throughout various industries so Permabond has a variety of approvals and specifications including military specified grades and NSF/ANSI 61 certified products for potable water.
Permabond pipe sealing (thread sealing) adhesive sealants are used in various industries including sprinklers pipework systems for fire protection, HVAC, and plumbing. These PTFE-based formulations allow easy assembly and provide an instant seal of 1000 psi and final cure strength generally exceeds that of most metal pipe material.
They cure when confined from oxygen on the metal threads and form a seal that is inert to water, steam, hydrocarbons, most acids, solvents, and glycol-based products. The product line covers a full range of viscosities and includes products with NSF/ANSI 61 certification and hydraulics grades.
Form in Place Gasket
Permabond’s FIP gasketing adhesives include high viscosity sealants which improve load transfer and stress distribution across flanges. Products set rapidly and provide corrosion-resistant seal integrity while eliminating the need for re-tightening flange bolts. Any number of shapes of gaskets can be made so there is no need to stock numerous sizes of pre-cut gaskets.
Permabond’s FIP gasketing anaerobic sealants are for metal to metal applications. High strength and high-temperature resistant products are available as well as very flexible FIP gaskets which are specifically designed to be easy to remove from soft metals such as brass and aluminum.
